There are certain occupations and professions that remain unexplored for career opportunities they provide. Regulatory Affairs or compliance is one such neglected profession. Even in the age of globalization and privatization, there still are many sectors of the economy where the governments have to play an active part. Examples include health care, finance and banking, and energy and environment.
These sectors relate directly with the welfare of the society, so unabated private participation could sometime play havoc, if not controlled. That’s why these sectors need to be controlled by laws and regulations framed by the government. For example, research, development and production of medicines and medical devices needs to be highly regulated to avoid the catastrophe.
The profession of Regulatory Affairs is an evolving one. A few international societies currently provide training and certification in Regulatory Affairs (visit raps.org, topra.org or capra.org for more details). For eligibility, you need a background in the areas you wish to work in, for example, in science or law. After attaining education in this area, you can easily find jobs in regulatory affairs in federal/state or local government agencies or can even work as an RA consultant.
The works of RA professionals involve advising companies on the laws and regulations affecting their business. In the U.S., agencies that provide jobs in regulatory affairs include:

*Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for securities and banking
* Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for foods, medicines and health products
*Federal Trade Commission (FTC) for advertising
*Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) for drugs of abuse and narcotics
*Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for water and pesticides

Many other agencies regulate alcohol, meat and poultry, consumer goods, and health insurance. Vacancies are always available in these agencies. Try looking for jobs in regulatory affairs by visiting the relevant sites.
